The 3A state track and field championships were held today at North Carolina A&T and three events were won by three Nash County boys Tracksters. Nash Central girls claimed a relay title. Two hail from Southern Nash and one from Rocky Mount. The three state champions are Jaquay Mitchell Sr Southern Nash Triple Jump. He won with a jump of 47 feet and nine inches. The Firebirds also scored big with Nadir Thompson sophomore who won the 200 meter dash.

Every so often I have mentioned that former Rocky Mount Gryphon Baseball players Bill Merrifield's son Whit who played on two national champion baseball teams at South Carolina was on the verge of making the majors. It happened Tuesday night as a player for the Kansas City Royals was sent to the minors and Whit Merrifield who this season has played second base in AAA Omaha got the call to report to KC
Wednesday KC played a doubleheader and Whitfield got a start in the second game of the DH. He got his first major league hit going 1-3. He started in left field and his ability to play all outfield positions an infield makes him a valuable utility player. During the KC broadcast Wednesdsy night with both his parents in attendance the tv crew went in the stands to talk to Bill and Kissie. Those of you who know the Merrifields can go on the website of the KC Royals and see that interview on line.
