Gryphons Beat Northern By A Yard

A game that can only be  described as a slobber knocker the Knights of Northern Nash quarterback Davontae Wiggins ran a bootleg  on third and long from Rocky Mount 23 midway in the fourth quarter and looked as if he was going into the end zone after jumping over a tackler at the five but while stretching trying to get the ball over the goal line Rocky Mount knocked the ball free, it rolled in the end zone and out of bounds giving the ball to Rocky Mount on their 20.  That was as close as Northern would get again as Rocky Mount wins 14-7.

Rocky Mount scored first on a two yard dive by Charlie Williams and Chase Miller's extra point gave the Gryphons the 7-0 lead.  A quarterback sneak by Davontae Wiggins and a single point by Travis Smith tied the game at 7.  A spectacular kickoff return by Detrelle Revis put the Gryphons in business and a pass in the flat to B J Sanders of 12 yards put the Gryphons in the lead at 14-7 at 5:02 of the half.  The last play of the half the Gryphons missed a 29 yard field to increase the lead.

Northern defense held Rocky Mount to 88 yards rushing and another 92 passing.  The Gryphons got only 67 yards in the second half. Rocky Mount held Northern to 195 yards for the game.  132 rushing and 63 passing.

Rocky Mount's biggest offensive threat on the night was Detrelle Revis who had two kickoff returns  totaling over 100 yards and a punt return of 50.  He may also have been the defensive player of the game intercepting two passes and had a third but was ruled a completed pass as Northern Receiver Raymond Bullock was able to get his mitts to force equal pocession to be called.

Neither team scored in the second half  but the Northern defense kept giving the offense the ball on the Rocky Mount  side of the field or near the 50. So Rocky Mount's defense came up big when they needed it.

Davonte Wiggins rushed 10 times 66 yards to lead Northern while BJ Sanders 40 yards led the Gryphons. Wiggins was just 2-12 passing for 63 yards while Gryphon quarterback Mckenzy Wright
Was 7-10 for 92 yards.

The Big East season ends next Thursday night instead of Friday.  Rocky Mounts heads to Hunt 8-2 3-1 while Northern drops to 5-5 1-3 and they Host rival Southern Nash.

Southern Nash earned the top seed in the Big East beating Nash Central 28-18
Tarboro 42 North Edgecombe 6
Fike 14 Hunt 7
SouthWest Edgecombe 32 Bedfingfield 29
Northampton 28 RM Prep 14
The shocker of the night St David's 24 RMA 16. RMA won by 52 just a month ago.

Rocky Mount offense has gone into a funk the last 3 of 4 weeks. The offensive line was awful tonight. Getting the plays called from the sidelines was slow. REVIS #31 was the best player on the field. Coach Battle needs to get Revis on the offensive side. HE is a playmaker. Unless Rocky Mount offense turns it on again they do not get past the second round of playoffs.

Officials were awful again tonight. Revis had 3 interceptions but got credited with 2. Officials picked up a flag on holding penalty and QB down but let play continue. Led to NN TD. Unacceptable. WHERE do they find these guys?

Nash Central figured out the wing.5 down lineman..4 line backers in the gaps and blitz.Because they know that Rocky Mount is going to run wide and the passing game is not an option.Football 101 run straight at the blitz!!!! The quarter back is not quick or fast, and does not have the necessary skills to be effective. The coach second guesses himself and takes any continuity out off a good offensive team. He is his own worst enemy. Yep....it all ends maybe in the second round.
