If you know any football player who plays for any high school in the area that plays in the Big East you may have noticed a change in that player this week. Positioning for the state high school playoffs for the Big East Starts Friday night.
High school OT .com has come out with their own computer rankings and Hunt from the Big East is the only team to make top ten. Rocky Mount, Nash Central and Southern Nash all failed to make the 3-A top 30. Everyone who has a ranking has a formula they go by and Rocky Mount out ranking both Nash Central and Southern is somewhat of a surprise to me. I would assume any ranking goes by who you have played and the Gryphons first five are just as tough as any and when you win them that even makes you higher.
Northern Nash beat Nash Central in Volleyball Tuesday while Hunt knocked off the Gryphons. Right now everyone in the league is chasing Fike. Next week is the end of the regular season and then there is the conference tournament.
There is a gigantic football game in the ACC this weekend and it is not the one you think. Duke plays Wake Forest and the Deacs have beaten the Devils every time they have played this Century. The Devils have their best chance to win this game in a long time. The Devils still think they can get to a Bowl Game and if they do they have to win this game.
Fans are still tore out of their socket over the bad call made on Monday Night Football when Seattle beat Green Bay on the last play of the game. So what happens today but the rumors are stirring that the NFL and the Regular Refs as close to an agreement to get them back on the field.
Most fans will say "yeah after Monday night the NFL Owners have come to their senses and are going to give the Refs what they want". I doubt that is totally true. Here is what I think is happening. Most NFL officials are men who have really great jobs in life but their part time job pays them $150,000 a year on weekends. The NFL regular season is now three weeks old and including the four preseason games that part time job that pays $150 thousand those refs have lost almost $50,000 of it.
Whether it is the NFL owners or the Refs they all should be embarrassed at what is occurring. If I was an NFL official after seeing the no call on the pass interference n the in zone I would be chomping to get back to work because the fill ins are embarrassing me at what I do part time.

Roy, The Irish And The Refs
Roy Williams got the goods today that the biopsy taken on his kidney last week was not cancerous. Praise the Lord for that good news. I don't care who you pull for but the way you feel about people has to stop when the game is over and worry about someones life. I don't care who you pull for while the game is on everyone on the other side are bums. After the game when reality sets in life doesn't rotate around a ball game but the way we treat people every day.
Roy Williams has been a great coach at Carolina and every where else he has ever been. He has been good for the ACC and in that way alone he has been good for every team that Carolina plays. He has not been good because he wins National Championships but the way he represents the University, The ACC any anyone who calls themselves of fan of any ACC school. Next week they will check out his other kidney to make sure he is clear there too.
Notre Dame sent a letter of intentions to the University of Michigan that they will discontinue their football series in three years. This is a result that ND has to make room for five ACC football games in the future as part of the arrangement to join the ACC. They will still need to trim back with some others. They have traditional games with Southern Cal, Stanford, Navy, Michigan St and Purdue. Somebody else needs to be trimmed and who is it going to be.
I don't know whether you have ever heard the story about why ND plays Navy every year and for the most part pound them every single time. The story goes that when the war started in the 1940's Notre Dame had lost so many students that they were on the verge of closing their doors when the U S Navy picked Notre Dame and other schools including Carolina to have Naval Officer Training on campus. Notre Dame was able to stay afloat as a University because of that and out of gratitude to the Navy have played the Naval Academy ever since. It will disappoint me greatly if they drop the Navy.
Looks like the refs in last night's NFL game really blew one last night or did they? You know the NFL has this stupid rule that you must possess the ball all the way to the ground and the Green Bay defender clearly had the ball five feet from the ground. The Seattle receiver after knocking a defender out of the way got his share of the ball on the way to the ground and by rule the receiver wins ties.
I have heard one ref signaled TD while the other incomplete. I saw a TD by one official and the other signalling to stop the clock. What I have not heard one person say is this. Is the replay official a part timer or is it the regular replay man from the NFL in the replay booth. If the officials were dead wrong the replay man could of changed the call but he didn't.
Don't give me this refs are killing the game. Remember when San Diego lost a game when the ref ruled an incomplete pass when it was a fumble but since he had rule incomplete pass it could not be changed. Last night after the game ESPN's Sports Center had the highest ratings in 17 years of Sports Centers. So what do you think ESPN has done all day but show that replay 7,984 times because you are watching. Stupid calls are great for the game because ratings go through the roof.

Free Education Demands
There is a story today about a UNC football player who got in a fight at 3am in the morning and was arrested for his actions. I hear that he has been suspended from the team. I think that any person who is given a free ride to go to college has a responsibility to act according while representing that university.
This applies to any academic scholarship, athletic or any type of free money to go to college. That person needs to have some culpability that if he fails to live up to a standard that embarrass those who are allowing them to go to that institution for free should be removed from that free ride. When I say removed from the free ride I mean off schlarship.
I suspect when all the evidence is in this young man probably had some amount of alcohol which to me is an embarrassment to himself, the institution and to those who are helping pay his free ride. This case could very well mean that there are people reading this that pay money to the Rams C lub that help send that young man to Carolina to play football. I can assure you this is not intended to hit on Carolina who is getting hit enough without this incident adding to their misery. Every college and University has issues like this all the time.
Can someone please tell me why everyone is so upset with the part time refs that the NFL is using for the first three weeks of the season so far. How easy we forget how sorry we think the real guys are when they get back. We are all now telling the NFL bring back the good refs when we all know whenever this strike/lockout ends we will be begging to bring back the part timers.
Just about everybody has written the the 49er's into the Super Bowl and they up and lose to the Minnesota Vikings. When I go to work every day some days I do better that others and despite how good a team is or can be there are days that they don't function properly that day. Yesterday was that kind of day for the Niners.
Lauren Doughtie heads into the last weekend of the Futures tour events for this year and she is right at $10,000 out of tenth place and tenth place gets a LPGA playing card for 2013. This event this weekend only the top two spots will earn at least 10,000 and if she can do that she has to hope that those that are 8th, 9th and 10th don't win enough money to close her out of the top ten even if she wins. It is a long shot for her at best.

Big Four Wins On Saturday
Carolina's dominating win over ECU leads the way as all four of the North Carolina ACC schools won. The Heels shut out ECU in the second half to win 27-6
Duke not use to being the favorite in any game finally found the rhythm eased on past Memphis 38-14
Wake facing the US Military Academy's wishbone attack the Demon Deacs out score the Army 49-37
State facing a wishbone attack in the Citadel jumped out early and coasted 52-14
ECU fans have to be disappointed in the second half. Don't think too many people thought they could win but Carolina's defense dominated the second half.
The early returns are in and Toddd Gurley of Tarboro high is the early favorite for freshman of the year in college football. Georgia romped over Vanderbilt last night andd Gurley who's running is making fans in Athens Georgia start thinking that Hershal Walker has been reborn. Gurley had 16 carries which is the most he has had in any game so far for 130 yards So far this year Gurley has carried 44 times for 406 yards. His per carry average has dropped all the way down to 9.2 yards per carry. By the way Georgia is 4-0.

Look Who's On Top
They just may have played the toughest non conference football schedule of anybody in the area and even though the results then were not good then that tough schedule is paying off now for SouthWest Edgecombe. Last night they beat Farmville Central 38-14 to take the lead in the Eastern Plains 2-A conference lead with a 2-0 record.
Buoyed by all of the public schools in Nash County being off last night there was a big crowd on hand watching RMA host Lawrence Academy. After scoring 76 last week people got to see a few more points than last week as Lawrence won almost all the stats except the main one the score board as RMA win two in a row for the first time in umpteen years as they take out Lawrence 81-52.
I understand there was a moment when the crowd fell hush as another Eagle player had to be carried to the hospital last night. You know those that root for the Eagles still have that spot in their heart over the injury to Cole Brake that will last a life time to those folks. Hope to pass along good news soon.
After being on the road for their first 15 matches of the season Campbell played their first home games this weekend and Pat and I became part of the Camel Crazies at their volleyball game last night. They lost but today won twice. They are now 7-11 on the season.
Last year N C State's women's Tri team didn't have enough to qualify as a team any time any of the girls ran in any races. Today the State women not only had enough runners to run as a team but they won their first race ever running in Wilmington. The Pack Guys finished second. That guy coaching the Tri team at State what's his named must be doing a pretty good job. Brooks Doughtie!
If you haven't seen this video yet you have just got to see it. Have you seen this soccer game with a player with one leg that plays with crutches. There is a high light of him doing a reversal and scoring a goal. I saw it Saturday morning on WRAL Sports so they probably have in their video file but may be You Tube. You just got to see it. This kid is faster on crutches than I was in my prime back in the day when I thought I could play ball.

Tyquan Picks The Buckeyes
You could see the results of a football program regardless of the size of the school that has won three straight football championships as today the best play for the Tarboro Vikings Tyquan Lewis chose Ohio State to play his college football.
Tyquan is the second Viking to make the big announcement while "live Streaming" to the world within the past year as Todd Gurley a three time state champ chose Georgia last winter. Tyquan is rated a four star football player and with his size everyone in the country is after him. It doesn't hurt one bit that Todd Gurley is the talk of the Southeastern conference three games into the college football season.
Wednesday in the weekly cross country run Northern Nash was the winning boys team with Nash Central second followed by Rocky Mount. Gryphon Mason Holt won another race this fall as he posted a time of 17:00 minutes in taking the win. This past weekend Holt ran in a race in Cary where the top runners in North Carolina all seemed to be running in the same race and Holt ran his personal best at 16:48. George Corbin finished second Wednesday with a 17:23.
Over in the girls race Fike came home the winner and Rocky Mount finished second.Michaela Williams from Nash Central was the top girl finisher.
Roy Williams was released from the hospital today after his kidney surgery yesterday. Boy- the way hospital stays have changed. Back in 1974 I had reconstruction surgery on my right knee at Duke and was in the hospital five days. Today they roll you off the bed as soon as they get you back off the operating table.
Not all that many high school games Friday but let's get to it.

SouthWest Edgecombe host Farmville as Eastern Plains conference play continues. After last weeks upset of Kinston the Cougars will either have a swelled head or they have found out who they are. I see the latter as the Cougars beat Farmville 42 24.
Since we don't have many picks this week I'll try my hand at RMA as they play Lawerence Academy. Lawrence is the little Ravenscroft of the east as they are close to Edenton, Plymouth, Williamston, Windsor and Ahoskie and get a few from each town. The result a solid program in sports. B W Holt has the Eagles rolling but it will be another close game but Lawrence wins 42-28.
High school volleyball tonight Northern who lost to Rocky Mount Tuesday stuns Hunt tonight while Rocky Mount in five sets beats Nash Central.

More Bad News
How much more bad news can the University of North Carolina take. They are trying to get through a what started to be a football issue and during the investigation it effected baseball ever so slightly but for the most part basketball has not been involved in all the goings on in Chapel Hill.
Now today the announcement that Roy Williams under went surgery to remove a growth on one kidney and just may need to have surgery on the other for possibly the same thing. Lab results are pending on how severe this is. This is about as shocking and out of no where like the day Dean Smith retired. Nobody saw this coming. If there is one institution that needs good news right now that that would be the Tar Heel nation. I hope I can speak for everyone when I say this regardless of whether you or Democrat or Republican or should I say Blue Devil or Wolfpack fan I hope you will join me in praying that God's will, will be done and if we all pray together united together the Lord will see fit to Heal Roy Williams.
Face Book was alive with the results of the Northern/Rocky Mount volleyball game last night played at Northern. In all the years I have watched volleyball this year's Rocky Mount team is the shortest team they I think have ever fielded and yet they beat Northern 3-0. I was totally shocked at the score.
Tab Wilcox is in her fourth year at the helm of Rocky Mount and this is by far her best coaching effort. They are right at 500 on the season but with the win last night are 3-2 in Big East play and with their size this year you would almost think four wins just might be a good year.
Volleyball is a game of angles and the best angle is slamming that ball down somebody's throat on the other side of the net. Rocky Mount simply doesn't have the size, yes this has always been a Rocky Mount problem but it is even worse because of their size this year. They have nobody who when they go for a kill can slam the ball down on the other team and yet they are doing a very nice job.
This Friday and Saturday Pat and I will be at Campbell as they will be playing their first home games of the season Friday night. Campbell starts a front line of six feet to six one across the net. When they play the likes of other teams taller if you play the back line you had better be ready when some of those girls spike the ball over the net. If you blink as they hit that ball at 100 mph you can get a bloody nose if you are not ready.
