Soccer had a big match yesterday at home against Hunt. It was Hunt and Rocky Mount battling against each other last year and Hunt wins the first meeting of the season with the Gryphons. The lost drops the Gryphons to 11-2-1. Monday the Gryphons open their conference season with 8-0 win over Nash Central.
Volleyball without maybe their second best player in Tamisha Walker on crutches played at Northern Nash on Tuesday and came home with a big win winning 3-1. Earlier this season the two schools battled in five sets during the Nash County Volley Ball tournament which was held at Northern.
The two schools will collide again on October 7th which will be the final regular season game and both teams are coming together to support the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. One dollar from every ticket will be donated by RMHS and pink tee shirts are on sale at both schools that says Rocky Mount on top of the volley ball and Northern Nash under the ball. Let's dig for a cure. A pink ribbon is in the middle of the volley ball. Tee shirts are $10 and are on sale at both schools.
Tuesday also saw tennis whip Northern 8-1 which got the Lady tennis team to 3-2 after the first round through conference play.
Wednesday Cross Country finished second to Nash Central in the weekly conference cross country run held at Red Oak Middle. Nash Central has one of the top cross country teams in the state. Seems that Nash Central senior Will Bass who is running in the mid fifteen minute range is by far the top runner in the east. Gryphon girls finished third in the girls race.
Marc McCadden former Northern Nash Knight has won the CIAA defensive player of the week after his performance for Chowan against Winston Salem State this past Saturday. McCadden had nine tackles, six solo and three of those were for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
We all want our children to be the greatest athletes that ever lived and when they are performing we forget sometimes that what they do they can get hurt. Monday a Red Oak middle school football player broke his neck while practicing. We need to pray for this young man in his recovery.
