Gurley Hauls In More Hardware

Tarboro High School's Todd Gurly who earlier this week was named to the Associated Press All State Football team today was named the AP Player of the year. Those of you of the younger generation don't know much about the Associated Press but in my day as a disc-Jockey your radio station or newspaper was under contract to either the AP or UPI(United Press International).  We had a tele-type machine in the back room that all the news came across the Wire.  My station we had  the AP machine.  Today since CNN and other twenty four hour a day news has taken over and the AP is only a small player to what it once was.

Gurley during this past football season scored 36 touchdowns and rushed for 2,600 yards in Tarboro's 15 games.  He then added another 120 yards and two scores in last week's Shrine game in Spartanburg SC.

It is no surprise at all after the fall sports season Hunt leads the way in the Wells Fargo Cup standings.  The Fargo Cup use to be the Wachovia Cup but WF goggled up Wachovia Bank in the last few months.  Unbeaten soccer and football were the main points that lead to Hunts lead.  Hunt has 65.5 points and are followed by Nash Central with 62.5.  Rocky Mount is third and right on their heels is Fike.  Rm has 59.5 while Fike 58.5.  Southern Nash has garnered 56 points while Northern Nash  has 50.

Speaking of gobbling up I guess everyone has heard by now that the Royal Bank Of Canada Center is getting a new name and will be called the Pittsburgh National Corporation Arena.  We will shorten that to PNC like we did when we called it the RBC Center.  What has  only been a little over ten years that the Royal Bank of Canada promised not to move from Rocky Mount and it won't be long now  before any left over Planters Bank folks will have a new Corporate office in Pittsburgh PA.

If you were in attendance last night at Southern and watched the Gryphons win the Nash County Holiday Tournament at times the Gryphons played top caliber basketball.  That six minute stretch after the half when it was tied at 31 all and Rocky Mount torched The Bulldogs for a 24-4 score is as good of basketball as I have seen in this area in the time I have been in Rocky Mount.  The negative in the equation is Nash Central almost made it all up which was good for the Bulldogs.

The Gryphons step into the high cotton next week in the Holiday Tournament at Broughton High in Raleigh.  regardless of how they fare there this team is developing nicely to make a deep run in March if they keep everyone healthy.
