If you take a look at the college baseball RPI as of Wednesday the state of North Carolina college baseball teams dot all over the top 64 which should qualify them to the NCAA baseball tournament which is still six weeks away.
North Carolina State got steamrolled by ECU last night because of strength of schedule that are 8th in the latest RPI. They are 26-11 over all. Carolina is 16th in RPI and 25-12. UNC Wilmington is 24th and 24-7 ECU 24-12 are 29th, UNC Greensboro 39th 28-10' Duke 21-17 is 46th, and Wake Forest 47th 23-17.
If the RPI is a measuring stick on who qualifies for the NCAA tournament then they all will make it and I find it hard to believe the the state of North Carolina putting seven teams in the tournament would not be a record.
Bracketology has become a word used by the major sports networks in order to help fill time on 24 hour a day sports channels. They have been refined to the point that 62 of the 64 teams that make the tournament were on the Bracketology before the tournament selection show.
The latest bracket predictions list the Pack as a two seed in the Florida Region. It also predicts Carolina to host a region and ECU and Wilmington to be in the Tarheel's Region. Duke and Wake are predicted as three seeds one in South Carolina regional and Mississippi State Region. Greensboro would draw a four seed in Miami.
There is a long way to go and a losing streak by anyone of these teams could fall right out. The important issue is to try to make the top 16 where you can be a regional host. If any of our teams make the top eight and win their regional then they might host a Super regional.
Baseball is a game where the momentum is based on the starting pitcher on the mound today. The facts are that 14 of the 16 regional host will win their regional and advance to the Super Regional. Almost 90 per cent of the super regional host win that too.
I have yet to see a college game so far this year but now the weather is getting into the seventies almost any day when your team might be playing is a good day to see a baseball game.
