The Gryphon World and Baseball

Going into Tuesday night's action Brian Goodwin has settle in nicely in his return to AAA baseball.  His 41 games in Syracuse he is hitting 313 which is second on the team 317 to  Trea Turner.  This past week he hit his first career home run with the bases loaded which led to a big come back win for the Chiefs. His 46 hits have led to 24rbi tops on the Chiefs.  Nine doubles and a triple are setting Brian up for his chance with the Washington Nationals.  Probably will take an injury for that all important call.

Hobbs Johnson in his second season in Buloxi Mississippi but his first full season as a short reliever.  The last time our check of Hobbs' progress his ERA was almost eight runs per game but since has had several short outings without allowing a run.  His record is 1-0 ERA has dropped to 5.60 pitching 17.2 innings in 12 appearances.  He has struck out 15.

Benton Moss has a 2-4 record in nine appearances and eight starts.  He Has pitched 42.2 innings.   He has struck out 46 batters and walked 14.  Playing in the Florida State League for Port Charlotte about 100 miles south of Tampa.  Not a bad place to spend the summer.

Collins Cuthrell is nine games into playing for Florence Kentucky in the Cincinnati  area  is batting 213 on 7 hits in 33 at bats.  He still doesn't have enough at bats yet to worry about hit batting average as a three hit night can raise his average 50 points.

Former Gryphon Sonny Wooten who now lives in Wayne County and son John Wooten who played at ECU and for the past few seasons has been in the Nationals organization has called it quits in professional baseball.

One gives up and another's dream comes true.  We told you last week about Whit Merrifield getting  called up to the Kansas City Royals.  Merrifield has now been to the plate 13 times with four hits including a double which computes to 308.  Those kind of numbers keep you in the Big Leagues.

I am hearing that two former Gryphons are going to player summer college league baseball this summer.  Blake Helms Barton and Cody Smith Chowan at this point I don't know who they are playing for.  Can anybody help me?

The brackets have been announced and for all those fans from the area planning on making a trip to Cary and the Division II College World Series this weekend Lander University's first game is Sunday Night at 7pm.  I am expecting a big Nash County turnout just like two years ago to watch Thomas Berry play his final week of college baseball.  There will be many family and friends in attendance for all three Gryphons including "Baseball" Brett Johnson coaching third and Jim Leggett keeping he pitchers on their toes.

Coleman Pitt Post 58 will try to open their season tonight at 7pm at Legion Field on Howell street.  They will be playing Pitt County Post 39 tonight and again at home Friday night.
