I Thought You Ought To Know

I try to give you all of the local sports that I can and as a one person operation there is only so much that I either see myself or someone else tells me about.  I thought this was well worth everyone knowing about even though it is not about any body from around here.

Chris Hatcher is from Kinston and went to college at UNC Wilmington.  He was drafted by the Florida Marlins in 2006 and in the September 2010 was called up as all major league teams do Hatcher went to the big club to sit on the bench mostly during the month of September.

The Marlins suggested to him during the off season that they would like to try him at pitcher and Hatcher went to spring training not as a catcher but as a pitcher and has done well enough he was called up to the Marlins and pitched in  his first major league game July 16th.  I don't know about you but I think this is one for the books.  A want-a-be major league catcher in 2010 and a major league pitcher in 2011.  What a story.

I looked on the Washington Nationals web site and they announced over the weekend that four of their draft picks have signed including 6th round pick Greg Holt from Carolina.  They had two first round picks and Brian Goodwin as the 34th pick and none of those players have come to any terms with the Nationals.

You may not know this but since this next coming school year will be the last for Rocky Mount High  baseball at the old stadium there has been a want by many to try to have an old timers game at the conclusion of the baseball season next spring .  Call it the last Gryphon game at the old Stadium.  I think it would be a great idea and all proceeds go to the Gryphon booster club.  If you ever wore a baseball uniform for Rocky Mount show up even if you didn't play to take one last bow at the old Stadium.

Have a big Barbeque  while the game is going on and let people like Danny Talbott, I think I have heard even Phil Ford played baseball, Bill Merrifield, Danny Weaver, Carter Harrell ,Jason Battle all of them who ever wore a RMSHS or RMHS come say good bye to the old stadium.  In order to do it up right this would take a big effort to get it to happen.  What do you think?
