McKenzie Warner qualifies for State Singles
I cannot tell you all of the results of all of the girls from our area who took part today in singles and doubles regional at Barton college in Wilson. Thanks to Joe Bell who's daughter Caroline was playing in the doubles.
In order to qualify for the State you have to win two matches and the Rocky Mount doubles team of Elizabeth Thompson and Carolina Bell won Friday but were beaten this morning one match short of qualifying for the State at Burlington next week. McKenzie Warner the conference singles champion needed to win twice to qualify and she won once yesterday and again this morning. The top two in both the doubles and singles advance and Warner will be heading to Burlington next Friday
And now the bad news:
Rocky Mount losing on Thursday in the opening round of the 3-A Volleyball playoffs was the beginning of what has become a disaster for the Big. East. Rocky Mount as the #2 lost in four games and today the #1 Seed Northern Nash falls in four games to South Johnston three games to one. The two top seeds from the Big East lost at home.
The #3 seed Hunt traveled to C B Aycock failed to win a game 3-0 and if you remember I told you earlier this week that Fike as a #4 seed maybe had the easiest game in the first round went five games with Currituck and lost to shut the Big East out of round two. Whatever the reason Big East girls are not tall enough and the ones that are not athletic as other Eastern North Carolina girls.
News that failed to get mentioned last week but the Rocky Mount boys won the Cross Country championship on Wednesday at Red Oak Middle School. Paul Lilley who is a part time CC runner because he is on the soccer team ran in the meet Wednesday and finished second just two seconds from winning the individual title then rode to Northern Nash and took part in Rocky Mount's 3-2 soccer win over Northern. Mason Holt finished just two seconds behind his teammate to finish third. Southern Nash's Napolian Patel was the Conference champ running a 17.08. Fikes Girls won the Conference championship.
